My Commitment to Responsible Breeding

As a responsible breeder of Yorkshire Terriers, I uphold the highest standards of ethics, care, and dedication to the well-being of these beloved dogs. My commitment to responsible breeding practices ensures I am contributing positively to the Yorkie breed and the overall canine community.

Health and Genetic Screening:
I prioritize the health of my Yorkies above all else. Before breeding, I conduct thorough health and genetic screenings to identify and eliminate any hereditary issues that could be passed on to offspring. This helps maintain the breed's overall health and reduces the risk of passing on genetic diseases. Some of the health tests I use include:

  • Health DNA: This test analyzes genetic markers to identify potential inherited diseases and conditions, ensuring that only healthy dogs are bred.

  • AKC DNA Profile: A DNA profile is performed to confirm the dog’s breed and parentage, which is important for ensuring the integrity of the breeding program.

  • CERF (Canine Eye Registration Foundation): This test checks for common hereditary eye conditions in dogs, including cataracts and retinal issues, helping to ensure clear vision in the puppies.

  • OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals): The OFA certification checks for hip and elbow dysplasia, ensuring that your Yorkie has healthy joints and is free from painful orthopedic conditions.

  • Patella Evaluation: This test evaluates the knees for luxating patella, a condition where the kneecap may slip out of place, potentially causing discomfort or mobility issues.

  • Ophthalmologist Evaluation: This specialized eye exam is performed by a certified veterinary ophthalmologist to identify any eye conditions that could impact your Yorkie’s sight or quality of life.

Selective Breeding:
I carefully select breeding pairs based on their genetic backgrounds, temperament, and physical traits to enhance the quality of each litter. Only dogs who meet the breed standard and have excellent temperaments are considered for breeding.

Proper Care and Socialization:
Your Yorkie receives the best possible care, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and veterinary check-ups. They are raised in my home, where they live and interact as part of the family. I provide ample opportunities for socialization, exposing puppies to various stimuli and experiences to ensure they are well-adjusted, confident, and ready to be loving companions.

Lifetime Support:
My commitment extends beyond the sale of each puppy. I offer ongoing support to new owners, providing guidance and assistance throughout the lifetime of the Yorkie. I want to ensure that every puppy has the best possible life in their new home.

Ethical Standards:
I adhere to ethical breeding practices, never overbreeding my dogs or participating in puppy mills. My goal is to produce healthy, well-socialized puppies who will make wonderful family companions.

Continued Learning:
I am dedicated to continuous learning and regularly update my knowledge on breeding practices, health advancements, and holistic care. This ensures that I am providing the best care for my dogs and their future families.

In summary, I am a responsible breeder because I prioritize the health, well-being, and preservation of the Yorkshire Terrier breed. My dedication, ethical practices, and care set a positive example for the breeding community, ensuring Yorkies continue to be cherished companions for generations to come.

More about me and my Yorkie Journey

About Me
Hi, I’m Brenda, the heart and hands behind Yorkie Lane. My journey with Yorkshire Terriers began in 2000, when I purchased my first Yorkie as a solution to my allergies to pets. I quickly fell in love with the breed, and what started as a personal solution became a deep passion for raising and breeding these wonderful dogs. To deepen my understanding of the breed and its standards, I began attending dog shows, which allowed me to connect with other breeders and learn more about what makes a true Yorkshire Terrier. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of expanding my knowledge in breeding, genetics, and holistic care.

In addition to my passion for Yorkies, I’m excited to be expanding my breeding program to include Biewer Terriers, a breed known for their charming personalities and striking appearance. I look forward to incorporating them into my family and continuing to raise healthy, well-socialized puppies.

Based in Western Colorado, I raise my puppies in my home, where they are treated as part of the family. As a small, in-home breeder, I prioritize quality over quantity, focusing on a few selective litters each year. All of my parent dogs are AKC registered, DNA tested, and health tested to ensure they are genetically sound and free of any inherited issues.

I believe in responsible breeding, which is why I test my dogs for health and genetic conditions, including Luxating Patella, collagen disorders, and common eye issues. I’m dedicated to ensuring my puppies are not only beautiful but also healthy and well-adjusted.

Beyond breeding, I am passionate about educating others on responsible pet ownership, training, and holistic care. I hold a deep interest in canine nutrition, genetics, and holistic health practices, and I’m always expanding my knowledge to ensure I’m providing the best care possible for my dogs and clients.

In addition to breeding, I offer ebooks and courses designed to educate and empower Yorkie owners and those looking to start their own breeding programs. My goal is to help others provide the best life possible for their furry companions and to support those who wish to raise healthy, happy dogs.

I’m here to help match you with the perfect Yorkie (or Biewer Terrier!) to fit your family’s lifestyle. If you’re ready to bring a puppy into your home, or if you’d like to learn more, feel free to explore my website or reach out directly. I look forward to working with you and making your journey with a new furry companion as fulfilling as mine has been.
