Penny from Heaven Lily of the Valley

Owner Surrender

Two little female Yorkies came into our rescue on 1-15-05Penny, 7 pounds, only has only three legs, and Lily 5.5 pounds, drags her back legs when she walks.

TODAY...............ranks #1 in the most EXTREME animal neglect case I have personally witnessed in my entire life.  These two little Yorkie girls we picked up today not only brought me to tears, they also made me almost vomit from the smell and the condition these little girls were in.  I cannot believe Teri drove for 1.5 hours with them in her car.

See picture,

it represents 2 cuts from one toenail, all of their nails were that long.  Also in the picture are hairballs I cut out of the pads of the back paws of Lily.  They were covered in poop and urine, covered in mats, eye crud to the max.  Penny had a tick actually buried in a mat and attached.  Penny is covered in scabs, from what I do not know and her skin all over her body is just scaly.

They are scared to death, all I did was give them both repeated baths, dried them (that went well) and have isolated them.  They still need bathed again and groomed and fully Vetted of course.  They are both extremely traumatized.  Teri mentioned that the woman had a 'whatever' attitude and was not the least bit affected by getting rid of them.

I started crying in the Vet's office.  Turns out, Penny's file said chewed leg off, now whether she did it herself or some other dog did it I have no clue.  She has a stub at the knee so the woman did not even have the Vet properly amputate it. Penny is 5 years old.  She has the demodex mange, she needs meds twice a day for 3 weeks, it is not contagious.  We go back for another worming and vaccines plus she still needs spayed and a dental.  We will get more lab results tomorrow.

Lily, not sure what happened to her rear legs, she sort of moon walks, from the knee down her legs do not work.  Going to see a specialist just for an opinion.  Lily is 11 years old and was a breeding bitch.  No teeth at all, has cataracts and, she is in heat.  We will get more lab results tomorrow.

From initial testing, there were no internal worms or parasites but we wormed them anyway.  They will need to remain in quarantine for 1-2 more weeks.  They are also on antibiotics for 14 days.  I will know more tomorrow if there is anything else.  They were so sweet in the Vet's office and roamed around like they had been set free from jail.  They are so sweet, so forgiving.

It will be a miracle if we can find a forever home for these sweet girls.  It will have to be a kind soul and very special person to take on such special needs girls.  At this moment in time I am not sure I want them out in that horrible world.  They won't be ready for at least 2 months.  Just today's Vet bill was $500.00, there is so much more they need.

The girls blood work came back with no apparent problems.  Thank goodness.

Penny and Lily were actually a little outgoing today.  When I went in their room they actually got up and came to me.  My heart was happy for the first time since I brought these two home.

Oh happy day!  Penny and Lily were wagging their tails this morning and excited to see me.  They didn't flinch when I put my hand near them!  I am doing the happy dance today!

1/23/05

They yelled for me today, BIG HAPPY FACE!  For the first time since they have been here they barked.  I am in and out of the laundry room many times per day but when I went in to see why they were all of a sudden verbalizing, I discovered their food bowl was spilled and they were not happy with that.  So it got filled back up and they were just so happy.  Poor Penny was scratching and crying today, we had to have a bath with the special shampoo for her mange.  She so loves her bath messaging.  I am pleased with their progress so far.  :-)

My what a difference TLC makes!  Most of the fear and mistrust is gone from these 2 sweet girls.  They are quite comfortable now in their new environment.  They are very verbal at mealtime and eating very well.

3/05

Penny and Lily have adjusted well within the general population of their foster home.  Lily does not require much at all.  A warm bed, food and love.  She gets around well and loves to be outside.

Penny on the other hand is a bit needy for love.  She follows me everywhere and has a bit of separation anxiety.  She is quite active, having only three legs does not put a damper on anything however, she cannot go up and down steps.

We shall be going for a follow up visit to the Vet very soon and see if these girls are strong enough to undergo their spaying.  Check back for more updates.

4/2/05

All is progressing well with Penny and Lily.  They have received all their necessary vaccines and are scheduled for their Spay the week of 4/4/05

Penny will also have a dental.  Lily does not have any teeth at all.  Penny appears to be over her Mange, but we are going to keep her on her meds for another 6 weeks to be sure.

Penny and Lily will be ready to be adopted the week of April 25th so we are now taking applications for them.  We'd love to see them stay together, but it is not required.  The IPPRA Board of Directors have decided that due to Penny and Lilly being such special needs girls, we will only accept applications from homes in the State of Indiana.

4/9/05

Penny and Lily's spay surgery went very well.  Penny even has some teeth left.  They are both recuperating nicely and are just about back to their selves.

4/23/05

What a bittersweet day today.  Penny and Lily have been adopted and will be living in there new home right smack on the border of eastern Indiana.  A very special family took both girls and we could not be more pleased they can continue their happy lives in comfortable bliss.  Not to mention spoiled rotten  :-)
