Yorkie Health

PLEASE consider getting a Yorkie from a Rescue, there are so many out there needing a home.  Visit PetFinder at www.petfinder.com.

I do not endorse or personally recommend any Yorkie breeders.  I know of quite a few but have only purchased puppies from three of them.  Please email me if you would like more information on the Breeders I know well.    PLEASE, do not be in a hurry to purchase a puppy!  Take your time!  Make a responsible decision and be a responsible pet owner!

When searching for a Yorkie Breeder, be sure to check all their references thoroughly and possibly speak to the people who have purchased a Yorkie from them.  Visit the Breeder's Kennel, if it is dirty or the dogs look unkempt, RUN away as fast as you can!  Make sure you see the parents of the puppy you are purchasing, at minimum the Mom, 25-50 percent of a pup's demeanor will resemble its Mother's.  She may be a slight bit protective, however, if she greets you baring her teeth and growling, leave quietly.

Avoid Breeders who keep their dogs outdoors at all times, puppies need to be taken indoors and learn socialization!   Responsible Yorkie Breeders should NEVER want to sell you a puppy less than 10-12 weeks old.  Toy dogs NEED to be with their Mothers until then.

Make sure the terms of the sale are in writing!  Make sure you understand the Health Guarantee and ask questions if you don't!  Make sure, if the puppy is to be registered with the AKC, that you receive the registration papers AT the time of purchase, unless of course they have some type of spay/neuter contract, then you will be provided the AKC registration papers once you fulfill the contract!  If they are a responsible Breeder, they should never hesitate to provide you with every bit of this information!   If they don't, do NOT buy the pup!

Check the puppies over thoroughly!  Check for sores or blisters, ear mites, ringworm or hair loss.  Do not rescue a puppy from an inhumane breeder, this does not make you a hero, this provides the financial means for a bad breeder to stay in business!

Learn everything you can about the breed.  Use common sense and avoid impulse buys. Join my Yorkie Club or post questions on my Message Board!  There are a lot of BAD Breeders out there and it would be a misfortune if you fell in love with your puppy only to discover that your puppy has genetic defects that will end up costing you huge medical bills or even worse, be forced to put your dog down.

Losing a beloved pet is a horrible experience!

There are BAD Breeders out there making false claims that they breed to improve the breed when they are actually a well disguised Puppy Mill.  All they care about is lining their pockets with your money and care nothing about the quality of dog they are producing!

PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE A PUPPY FROM A PET STORE!

Breeding Yorkies, or any dog for that matter, is a responsibility that should not be entered into by an amateur.  It is an art and a science!  A well knowledgeable and reputable breeder spends much time and money to insure and guarantee that they are producing healthy puppies with good temperaments, no genetic defaults or health issues.

Pet Stores sell puppies that come from Puppy Mills.  Puppy Mills are appalling places and should be permanently shut down.  As long as you, the consumer keep supporting the Pet Stores by buying a pet from them, Puppy Mills will continue to exist.

Visit No Puppy Mills Dot Com    To learn more details about Puppy Mills!

Please!  DO NOT shop at Pet Stores that sell dogs.   If you think that you are saving a puppy when you are buying at a pet store, you are actually supporting Puppy Mills to produce more. We can put a stop to the horrible abuse that is inflicted on innocent animals by Puppy Mills.  I urge anyone considering the purchase of a pet to seek out a good breeder, do your research, check their references, get a written health guarantee and avoid Pet Stores.

Responsible reputable breeders DO NOT sell their dogs to Pet Stores.
